Crucifixion

artist unknown

oil on canvas - 39.5" x 27"

late 1700's to early 1800's

Christ's sacrifice on the cross brought about the redemption of humanity from the original sin of Adam, whose sin brought death to the world.  Thus the skull at the base of the cross is understood to be that of Adam and also a reference to Golgotha, "the place of the skull," where the crucifixion occured.  Legend suggest that Golgotha is also the burial place of Adam.
