The Conversion of St. Paul

unknown artist

oil on canvas

late 1700's

This painting most likely was part of an German altar piece.  St. Paul is the only person who is looking up towards Christ, who is carrying His cross, while his companions turn away in total fear.

I saw a light from the sky, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my traveling companions.  We all fell to the ground and I heard a voice saying to me in Hebrew, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?...' And I said, 'Who are you, sir?' And the Lord replied, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.'  Acts 26:13-16
