First Station: Jesus is condemned to death

Home / First Station: Jesus is condemned to death

Station Description: A guard restrains Jesus and holds His arms from behind. Two unemotional guards contrast the massive crowd of people, mostly expressing rage and hatred towards Jesus, while children look on sad and confused.

On the left, a Roman guard signals with his hand that you are in a restricted area, as the sculpture acknowledges your presence.

The Roman Governor Pontius Pilate, high on the steps in his judgement seat, is presented with Christ (John 19:13). He is in deep thought, for he does not want to sentence Jesus to death.

Pilate holds a coin engraved with the face of Caesar in his right hand.

Pilate’s wife whispers in his ear.

Behind them, a servant brings out a basin of water to Pilate.

At the top left of the Station, Barabbas, who was freed instead of Jesus, is brought out in chains by Roman soldiers.

To the right of them, Judas hangs himself on a rope tied to a tree.

In the center of the landscape there are two houses; the one built upon the rocks is still standing, while the one built upon sand has collapsed (Matthew 7:24-27).

To the left of Jesus’ face, John consoles Mary.
