Second Station: Jesus carries His cross

Home / Second Station: Jesus carries His cross

Station Description: Jesus, after being scourged and crowned with thorns, takes up His cross. He is surrounded by Romans and servants who show both compassion and anger towards Jesus.

At the top left of the Station, Pilate writes on the parchment “INRI”, the Latin initials for Jesus, King of the Jews, which will be nailed to the cross (John 19:19; Matthew 27:37).

In the distance, in the center of the Station, Barabbas celebrates his newfound freedom with a group of friends.

To their left, a father gives his son a snake and a stone (Matthew 7:9-11).

To their right, a man drinks a bottle of wine while a snake bites his leg (Proverb 23:30-32).

Beside him, a man without an eye is pokes out another man’s eye.

Above the right beam of the cross, a tax collector humbly prays beside a Pharisee who dramatically prays with his arms outstretched (Luke 18:10-14).

On the right, Mary, overcome with emotion, tries to break free from the restraint of a Roman guard.

Behind Mary, John is held back and threatened by Roman soldiers.
