Fourth Station: Jesus meets His Mother

Home / Fourth Station: Jesus meets His Mother

Station Description: Mary finally gets close enough to Jesus to stretch out her hand, hold His face, and look into His eyes for a moment. A Pharisee grabs Mary’s headscarf and tries to get the attention of the Roman soldier who looks away from the scene.

Behind Mary, John, grief stricken, clutches his face with his hands.

The Roman soldier’s shield has pagan symbols of a snake eating its own tail and two men dying by the same sword.

At the top left of the Station, in a tower, a woman places a lamp on a lampstand (Matthew 5:15; Mark 4:21-22; Luke 8:16).

Next to the Roman solider, a Pharisee’s prayer shawl is adorned with images of the Old Testament teaching “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” (Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21).

Behind the Pharisee, in the distance, a man with his camel and many possessions tries to go through a very small doorway (Luke 18:25).

In the center at the top of the Station, a rich man holds an outdoor banquet near a newly constructed barn while a cloaked skeleton points at him, representing that his death is near (Luke 12:16-21).

To the right, a person gives pearls to swine between two tall trees (Matthew 7:6).

In the middle of the Station, a person sews a new piece of cloth onto an old garment, and to their left, another man pours new wine into an old wineskin (Luke 5:36; Mark 2:22).

On the right, a grandmother protects her two grandchildren who hold cups of water.

Above them, Roman soldiers compel Simon of Cyrene to help Jesus carry His cross (Matthew 27:32).
